More than a century of excellence

From Six Rooms to the Grand Hôtel Cravat

The story of the Grand Hôtel Cravat began in 1895, when Nicolas Cravat and his wife Catherine Loewe opened a restaurant with six guest rooms in the heart of Luxembourg City. While Catherine devoted herself to the kitchen, Nicolas welcomed guests in the dining room. Together, they laid the foundations of a family legacy that has now spanned five generations.

Over the decades, the establishment grew in reputation and gradually expanded. In 1932, the original building was demolished to make way for a more imposing structure, completed in the late 1930s. With its rounded balconies and distinctive architecture, the new façade marked an important chapter in the hotel's history, by which time it offered around twenty rooms.

Expansion continued in the 1950s with the construction of a new wing overlooking Boulevard Roosevelt, now home to Bar Le Trianon. In 1965, a third wing connected the two existing buildings, giving the Grand Hôtel Cravat its present-day appearance.

From a small family-run restaurant to one of the capital's landmark hotels, each transformation reflects the dedication of successive generations of the Cravat family. More than 130 years after its beginnings, the hotel continues to preserve this remarkable heritage, where family history and the story of Luxembourg City remain closely intertwined.

The Historic Elevator

Installed in 1945 by the Swiss manufacturer Schindler, the historic elevator at the Grand Hôtel Cravat is a remarkable reminder of the past. For more than 80 years, it has carried generations of guests and remains an integral part of the hotel's identity.

With its original cabin, doors and controls carefully preserved, this historic elevator has stood the test of time without losing its authenticity. Still in daily operation and adapted to modern safety standards, it reflects the Cravat family's commitment to preserving its heritage.
